Burger takes over the helm of the Bulldog football program

After some seven on seven competition at ISU, Gilbert and Panora and a series of short summer Sunday night practices, Ogden’s new football coach and his players were getting even better acquainted during an early-morning pre-season  football camp that began Monday, Aug. 4.

Coach Jacob Burger served as head coach the past three years at River Valley Community School in Correctionville where, after a long drought, he led his team back to the play-offs the past few years. He also held the position of athletic director in his final year.

Burger had four years of experience as an assistant at Ames High School while a student at Iowa State University.

“I’ve done both ends of the spectrum,” said Burger, “from Class 4A to 8-man and now 11 man.”

Coach Burger is a 2006 graduate of Russell High School in southern Iowa. He majored in kinesiology at Iowa State where he received his Bachelor’s Degree with a PE option and K-12 health endorsement in 2011.

Not only  will Burger be coaching the Bulldogs, he will be teaching physical education and health. In the off-season he plans on assisting with boys track and junior high basketball.

According to Burger the team has a good core of kids returning this year including several underclassmen with a lot of playing experience.

“The players seem really athletic and that fits well into our up-tempo style of play,” says Burger.

What he sees in his players at this point is a group focused on weight training and conditioning.

“The kids are really into it right now,” commented Burger. “Ogden coaches had a good program established with the weight room. This is one of the better high school weight programs I have seen. Coach Hamilton has done fantastic with it. I’ll just be an addition to that program.”

Burger knows he is stepping into a program that has strong leadership in place with coaches Rick Hamilton and Brian Reimers who will stay on as assistants. Chip Wisecup and Bernie Sohm will also be on the sidelines and at practice  assisting.
