Doug Stoakes to lead Ogden golfers

Ogden golf, under the leadership of Coach Doug Stoakes, competed against Panorama and Madrid Monday, April 2 at Lake Panorama (after presstime).

“As the new head coach of Ogden’s golf team, I have absorbed a winning and competitive tradition,” said Stoakes who is taking over for long-time coach Randy Johnson. “I was lucky enough to step into a program that so far seems to be running itself.” Johnson, in his last year at the helm, coached the girls team to a conference championship and a state berth.

Based off of last year’s scoring averages, Stoakes expects Miranda Wheelock (49.22 avg.) and Kayla Walker (52.00 avg.) to be his top two returning golfers. He is looking forward to seeing the progress from three others who have seen varsity experience: Faith Mohr, Emma Blair and Hope Schroeder.

“My goal for the girls this season is to teach them new aspects of the game and continue a competitive nature.”

As for the boys squad they will be led by senior Jacob Hildreth and junior Kayden Kruse who both averaged a score of 47 last year. Jade Thompson, Jacob Kathman, Seth Bishop and Ryan Nichols are expected to progress, which the coach says should help reach their goal of improving on the sixth place conference finish from last year.

Members of the girls golf team include: Seniors Ashton Boggess, Michaella Walker and Maranda Wheelock; sophomores Emma Blair, Faith Mohr, Dryden Ross, Ramsey Ross, Hope Schroeder; freshmen Shaylie Johannsen, April McGriff, Elizabeth Stonehocker, Emily Walker.

The boys team consists of seniors Seth Bishop, Wesley Clausen, Jacob Hildreth, Jade Thompson; juniors Preston Gronseth, Carson Hayes, Jacob Kathman, Kayden Kruse; sophomores Ryan Nichols, Mason Will; freshmen Cooper Carson, Gaven Gronseth.
