Getting a jump start on his new career

Writing a book was something the retired Army Lt. Col. put on his bucket list. He can now check it off that list.

“The Hunt for Billy Jack has been getting good reviews. Three five-star reviews so far on Amazon,” says author Brian Oeffner.

Not bad for his first attempt at writing a book.

A book signing will take place Saturday, Sept. 23 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Leonard A. Good Community Library.

Oeffner’s mystery novel is about a retired elite Army combat team that travels into Canada in search of a former team member, Billy Littlebear, after he goes missing during a fishing trip.

Just what was the author’s motivation behind the book?

Oeffner retired from the Iowa Army National Guard in December of 2011. He then accepted a one-year tour of duty to Afghanistan with the Department of Defense.

“There isn’t a lot to do in Afghanistan, when you’re not working or on a mission. So, I always kept a paperback book in my cargo pocket, and read more books that year in Afghanistan than any other year in my whole life,” he explained.
