Girls return top three from state golf team; boys, although young, could surprise

With the weather getting warmer, the Ogden golf team hopes their clubs heat up so they can perhaps head to the state tournament.

Randy Johnson is entering his 12th year as Ogden’s head coach for both boys and girls golfing. He is very excited about this upcoming season’s prospects.

“Both teams are looking at pretty successful seasons. The girls team is bringing back their three top girls on our state team. We placed seventh in state last year,” Johnson said. “The boys lost 6 seniors, but even though we are young we have lots of experience in underclassmen.”

Johnson was very excited for the girls team’s chances of returning to state, but was cautious as well.

“We have won conference five times since I’ve been here, so it can definitely happen. The problem is that we will have to go to Winterset and play at Van Meter’s home course. We have already been talking about sneaking some rounds in there. Get used to the course. It won’t be easy but we have some great golfers.”

With those great golfers, Johnson is hoping that the girls get to the 190’s, maybe 180’s by the end of the season. At the state meet Maranda Wheelock shot 183, Hannah Carter 185, and Kylie Nichols shot 196 so it definitely is possible. Though Johnson thinks they might even get lower than their targets.
