Lentz takes podium at state tournament, finishes eighth

Ogden wrestlers Austin Flynn, Shawn Heaning, Austin Lentz and Henry Haglund competed in the State Individual wrestling tournament last Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Ogden grapplers wrestled really well but only came away with one of them able to get on the awards stand.

“We had high hopes of all of them getting on the stand but it just didn’t happen,” commented Coach Brian Reimers.

Ogden did have one lone place winner in sophomore Austin Lentz who won two back-to-back matches to get him into the 8th place position.

Haglund had two very close matches in his opening round and then again when he was wrestling back against Casey Pence from West Branch, losing a close 6-2 decision to the third-ranked grappler.

“We are always really proud of the Ogden kids who make it to the state tournament,” said Reimers. “It is the finish to the season. Of course we would love to have them always be state champions but each weight class only crowns one of them. Just making it to state is outstanding. When they get on the stand, even more so.”

Flynn and Lentz, both underclassmen, will have more opportunities to get there and place.
