Lingering memories of their neighborhood card club

When doing our 60 Years Ago column each week, I notice numerous small articles dotting the society page. Card clubs were popular during the 1950s and 1960s when many women, who were stay-at-home moms, gathered weekly and played cards. Their creative names easily revealed what their club was about: U-Delt-Em Club, Hoos-Hi Bridge, Tuesday Pinochle Club, Canasta Club and Delt-A-Dek, among others. You would think by reading the stories that these women had no first names: U-Delt-Em Club met Thursday and played 500 at three tables according to one article. Those in attendance were Mrs. William Dohms, Mrs. Henry Lark, Mrs. John Morris, Mrs. Vernon Leichliter and Mrs. Scott Dillman.

My husband Jeff remembers his parents being active in a card club. No fancy name, in fact he didn’t recall it ever having a formal name. They were just a group of good friends, couples from the same neighborhood south of town, who gathered at each other’s homes once a month and played cards.

In visiting with Norma Crosman recently, Jeff brought up the card club they and his parents Bob and Ada Pierce were in.
