Local talent on display at area cemetery

The Linn Cemetery south of Dayton is home to a brand new set of gates fabricated at Southeast Valley High School. Guided by teachers Mike Swieter and Steve Kehoe, the metals class assembled the gates according to a design drawn by designer Barnabas Lundberg of Boone.

The project started when the Trustees of Pilot Mound Township in Boone County decided to give Pilot Mound’s oldest Cemetery a facelift. The Linn Cemetery, originally known as the Bethel Owen Cemetery, was started in 1854 by the family of Bethel Owen after his death. The cemetery was privately owned until 1905 when the Township Trustees took over care of the grounds.

In 2012 the Trustees started a five-step project by contacting a Pilot Mound Stone Artisan, Tracy Lee. Lee took local field stones donated by area farmers and erected a pair of magnificent pillars at the cemetery’s entrance. Step two was to grade a drive through the cemetery with white rock. This project was completed in 2015 by Pat Kelly Construction of Otho.
