Merlyn Winterfeld

  Merlyn “Merle” Albert Winterfeld, 94, of Ogden, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny, Iowa.

  Merlyn Albert Winterfeld, son of Theodor and Edna (Rehder) Winterfeld was born on April 22, 1929, in Sioux County, Iowa.  He received his early education in a one room school house, followed by graduation from High School in Sioux Center, Iowa.  

 

  On January 14, 1951, Merlyn was united in marriage to Doris Elaine Vipond in Hudson, South Dakota.  Shortly after their honeymoon, Merlyn was drafted into The U.S. Army.  After completing training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he was assigned to C Battery of the 90th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division.  His battery provided direct fire support to the front lines during the Korean War.  He fired nearly 10,000 rounds on his assigned 155 Howitzer.  He was honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal in 1953.  He returned from Korea to farm the family farm in Northwest Iowa near Sioux Center.  Merlyn and Doris had two children, Ruth and Gary.  The couple moved to Ogden in 1968 where they owned and operated the Coast to Coast Hardware.

 

 Merlyn previously served as a volunteer on the Ogden Fire Department and was a member of the Ogden Lions Club. He enjoyed square dancing, reading, travelling, gardening, wood working and most of all spending time with family.

  

In addition to his parents, Merlyn was preceded in death by his wife, Doris in 2022; his grandson, Andrew Peck in 2008; and his four brothers, Julius, Edwin, Carroll, and Duane Winterfeld.

 

 Left to honor his memory are survivors: his daughter, Ruth, and husband Gerald (“Jerry”) Peck of The Colony, TX; son, Gary Winterfeld and his partner Terry Fisher of Ogden; grandchildren, Ben Winterfeld and his son, Solomon; Whitney (Tyler) Vohs and their children, Zachary, Zoey, Zaiden, and Zaylee; Brooke (Tyler) Klotz and their children, Gabe, Rylee, and Grace; and his sister, Marlene Wegner.

  

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
