Ogden gears up for RAGBRAI

Plenty of signs will be welcoming bicyclists to our community next Tuesday, July 24. City Administrator Emily Clausen has a list of clever Burma Shave-esque slogans she plans on posting along the RABGRAI route. These catchy phrases are sure to draw some chuckles from passers-by:

When in doubt, pedal it out. Ogden is just (plug in number) miles

Bike hair? Don’t care. Stop by Ogden. We’ll see you there!

Free brake checks. Stop if you can.

Pump tires . . . not gas!

RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa) will begin day three of the ride in Jefferson and is expected to pass through Ogden that morning with many cyclists making it their lunch stop.

What’s on the menu? Sweet corn, baked potatoes, salad, pies, hoagies, a variety of fruit and multiple barbecue options. Riders are guaranteed not to go away hungry. Ogden’s main street will be lined with over 20 food and drink vendors.

Local organizations such as Ogden Music Boosters are hoping to take advantage of the state-wide annual event and cash in that day. Amy Chumbley, Treasurer for the group, is excited about that day. “It’s a whole new experience for us. We had to buy a temporary food license so we are under regulation,” she explained. They’ll be catching the breakfast crowd by serving muffins and cinnamon rolls from 6 to 9 a.m. A baked potato bar follows. “I was told a vendor one year had 500 potatoes and sold out quickly.” That’s initially the number of potatoes they planned, but when the supplier heard what the profits were for, they more than doubled the order. “We now have 1,100 to cook and serve,” said Chumbley. They will be receiving a lot of help from food service coordinator Cindy Sprecher who will be manning ovens at the school. Funds raised will go towards music trip expenses. Every four years the OHS music department performs in Orlando, Florida.
