Ogden teacher recognized as educator of the year

For us locals, it’s no secret that Ogden Community School District is a hidden gem, with many unique programs and teachers who make it special. From agriculture to hospitality, Ogden students are treated to a plethora of knowledge from teachers who deeply care about their students.

Doralene Abdel-Halim is no stranger to this commitment, as she has been serving as Ogden’s Hospitality and Tourism Management teacher for the last seven years. This year might just be the best one yet though, as her efforts have been officially recognized when she received the Iowa Family and Consumer Sciences Educators (IFCSE) 2019 Educator of the Year Award.

Nominated earlier this year by Principal Maury Ruble, Abdel-Halim received the award during a luncheon banquet on Aug. 5 that recognized teachers from across the state.

“Doralene works tremendously hard for our kids,” said Ruble. “I might have written the nomination, but her experience and dedication won the award.” A veteran of the industry, Abdel-Halim spent 30 years working in hospitality and tourism management before pivoting toward teaching the next generation the ins and outs of her former business world.
