Ogdenites win the race - an Ogden history feature story

Tim Johnson, grandson of Clarence Rose, came across these news articles from a 1915 issue of The Ogden Reporter. The articles document some early auto races across Iowa.

“Crosman had a Huppmobile dealership in Ogden at the time,” said Johnson. “These early races were very important as all of the small towns wanted the main roads to go through their town.”

Johnson’s sister-in-law, Virginia, has the winning trophy from the race.

Crosman and Rose will

make run

W. H. Crosman of the Crosman Auto Co. and Clarence Rose, State agent for the Hupp Auto, not being satisfied with the run made by Thompson of Des Moines, the first of the week over the Lincoln Highway from Clinton to Council Bluffs, left here Wednesday morning for Clinton in a Hupp touring car, to leave there Thursday morning at 1:00 o’clock to make the run to Council Bluffs in an effort to establish a record run over the Lincoln Highway for a stock car.

Thompson in his run Monday only averaged 27 miles per hour from the time he left to Clinton until he arrived at Council Bluffs. Messrs. Crosman and Rose believe they can naturally reduce that running time even through they are not making the run in a car stripped for racing. They are using an ordinary Hupp  touring car with only the top and wind shield removed.
