Open house and rededication of the library

I guess you can say a photo that appeared in a 1971 issue of The Ogden Reporter went viral, a term seldom used at the time, except in reference to diseases. The photo of Ogden librarian Jeanne Phipps and her “No Silence” sign caught the eye of the late Gordon Gammack, a Des Moines Tribune columnist. The story spanned the nation, ultimately appearing in Time magazine.

Phipps claimed she ran the most informal library in Iowa and intended on keeping it that way. The sign mimicked Phipps’s philosophy: You’re never going to help children to love reading if you’re going to have a dead atmosphere.

The Leonard A. Good Community Library will be honoring the librarian who retired in 1984. The public is invited to an open house of the newly-remodeled library Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to noon. A dedication ceremony honoring Phipps for her 27 years of service will take place at 10:30 a.m. A children’s section is being dedicated to her.
