The responsibility of hard work

Max Porter is a man of few words, but I got to visit with him for a short time recently. He has a connection with the Northern Natural Gas story we shared from Herrold Rickey.

It was either 1955 or 1956 when Max was sixteen or seventeen years old, he and four others were hired by a sub contractor, Art Plath, to dig ditches starting eight miles south of Ogden and going all the way to Redfield. A Texas pipe laying company had been contracted for the job to provide the transport of natural gas between the two locations.

Lawrence and Harold had a truck in Perry where they loaded up specially cut pipes, notched on the ends which would slide over the ditch openings. Max, John and DeWayne would be at the job site where they dug out the ditches. It was Art’s job to push the tile through after Max and DeWayne had dug it out four feet by hand.
