Special State Fair Recognition

As a member of the Central Iowa Sewing Guild, Sue Bogue entered four of her projects in the Iowa State Fair.  She earned ribbons on all four.

Sue placed second with her infant dress size 2, third with her toddler dress size 4, third place with her pajamas size 8 and on a winter coat which she made for herself, she earned fourth place. Her winter coat was displayed at the fair.

Central Iowa Sewing Guild, for which Sue serves as president, had a goal of showing the public there are still people who sew garments to wear.  Quilt sewing is very prevalent, but that’s not all there is.

Their group had a great showing at the fair, winning the Sweepstakes.  For that honor, they had to have the most entries and one member had to earn a blue ribbon.

Bogue, who taught Home Economics at Ogden High School from 1971-1977, said, “Some of us still sew garments to wear. It’s mostly for fun now.  It used to be that we could sew to save money. I already know what I’m sewing for next year though!”

Draft horses always attract attention at the state fair

Harry Haglund of Ogden competed in the 15-18 year old division of the Draft Horse competition at the 2014 Iowa State Fair and was awarded Top Senior Showman.

To earn this distinction Haglund competed in four events:

1) Decorator: In this class, the horses mane and tail are braided and decorated and the horse is made “show ready” in a 30 minute time limit.

2) Showmanship: The horses are presented to the judge.

3) Cart class: Drivers use one horse and drive a pattern in the ring for the judge, walking, trotting, moving forward and backing.

4) Team class: Drivers have twohorses hitched to a hitch wagon and drive in a pattern in the show ring.  In all classes, the drivers are judged on their ability to have control and maneuver the horse throughout the ring.

Haglund earned the most points overall to receive the Top Senior Showman award.  He was presented with a new show halter by Paul and Sandy Sparrow in memory of Dick and Joy Sparrow of Zearing, Iowa.

Rachel Boettcher of Ogden competed in the ladies gelding cart class at the State Fair.

“This was her first time in the show ring,” said Sue Haglund, Harry’s mother, “and she did a fantastic job placing third in a tough lineup of horses from around the country.”
