Use of fireworks inside city limits could be subject to fines

Community members voiced their concerns about fireworks during the public comment portion of the July 9 Ogden City Council meeting.

“There were just a few who had concerns about the noise, mostly the effect it was having on pets,” said City Administrator Emily Clausen.

As a result, council members reviewed the current Code of Ordinances and agreed it should be brought up to date and include a schedule of fines similar to other metro areas.

Ogden’s current code, Code 41.11, states it is unlawful for any person to use or explode any fireworks (within the city limits). The City can grant special permits for fireworks displays by a City agency, fair association, amusement park and other organizations or groups approved by City authorities.

Clausen said she thought there were less shot off in town this year than last. “Last year was the first year they could purchase fireworks legally in Iowa. The newness has probably worn off.”

The council also reviewed an ordinance enacting a new section for collection of fees for response to vehicle fires or extractions for owners who reside outside the fire department’s first response jurisdiction.
