Vocal group chosen "best of center"

Science room, art room, media center, nearly every available room at Ogden High School was occupied. A guardian at the door was an indication that room was one of the nine centers. Musicians from a dozen schools invaded Ogden Saturday, April 7 when OHS hosted the State Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Parents, grandparents, fellow students quietly take their seats. Performing in Center 1 may be a vocal soloist. A saxophone quartet may be standing before a judge in Center 5. Outside the doors are students nervously waiting their turns. The halls are bustling as students and spectators make their way between performances.

Stepping through the doors of the gymnasium sheds a whole new light on contest day. This is where students from visiting schools park all their belongings for the day, scattered across the gym floor and overflowing into the bleachers. And for many, the location of a last minute run through. Surprising is their ability to tune out all the surrounding noise. One girl could be heard from the bleachers practicing her vocal solo while a nearby a percussionist lightly taps out a beat on the snare drum. Off in another area a young man meanders around, clarinet to his lips. Nearby a friend holds up music for a practicing saxophone player. In order to help pass the time, for what is sure to be a long day, a two groups of students break out a deck of cards.
