Walk 3.1 miles In My Boots for a great cause

It’s safe to say that nearly all of us have heard the phrase “walk a mile in my shoes,” in regard to relating to another person’s situation. It’s a good lesson to learn; whether you’ve been there or not, you should always try to understand others’ situations with compassion. So when Sean Taylor was injured during his deployment to Afghanistan in 2010, he unfortunately caught a glimpse of what it’s like for other veterans with injuries to transition back to a normal life. Taylor realized that there was an opportunity behind this lesson to help others in the future, and from there, In My Boots was born.

In My Boots is a student group at DMACC focused on helping members of the community in need. For the last six years, the group has hosted an annual 5k in order to help raise money to go toward the purchasing and training of service animals for veterans with PTSD and children with special needs. Because of their extensive training, a dog costs about $12,000 total, often putting them out of reach from those who need them. In My Boots helps to bridge this gap by raising funds to lower the cost of a dog to the individual. In order to make sure their efforts remained as local as possible, all donations will go to Paws & Effect, a nonprofit organization based in Ankeny that raises, trains, and places service animals with veterans and children with disabilities. In the past, In My Boots has been able to raise enough to pay for a dog that has since been homed.

“We want our students to learn how important community involvement is, and what better way to teach that than an event that supports those in need,” said Taylor.
