What Coach Burger is expecting from his young squad

The Ogden High School football team’s season starts this Friday at Woodward Academy in a game that will feature a lot of fresh faces.

The Bulldogs lost a lot of talent from last year’s team that went 5-5 and bowed out in the first game of the playoffs. That includes losing Austin Lentz, Ogden’s all-time leading rusher, who broke the single season record for rushing yards and ended his career with 60 touchdowns. Despite all of that, it looks like this could be a successful season according to Head Coach Jacob Burger.

“This is a young team. I’ve had some veteran teams and this isn’t one of them, but that’s not always a bad thing. This means that players have the chance to step up and make plays,” Burger said.

Despite losing the aforementioned star running back, Burger doesn’t think the team’s philosophy will change. They are hoping to attack teams with a balanced offense, a mix of pass and defense. They do return quarterback Jade Thompson who started the last couple of games so that will help.

“Under me we’ve had a couple of 2,000 yard passers and we have had some 2,000 yard rushing seasons too. We just do whatever we are best equipped to do,” Burger said. “But we do want to establish the run. As an Ogden team, we may run spread but we always want to be able to run the ball.”
