In the late hours of February 6, 2021, Dixie Hickcox reunited with loved ones from her past. She was born in December, 1957 to Ray and Elaine Dykes in Ames, Iowa.
Dixie spent many years in Bloomfield before life events led her to Cambridge. She was working in Ames at Roche Vitamins when she met the love of her life, Fred. They married in June, 1987 and they lived the rest of her years in Ogden. She was a devoted mother, a love-struck grandmother, and an adoring great-grandmother.
Dixie was well-known and loved in her community for her 15+ years as a bus driver for Ogden Community Schools. She knew each and every passenger by name and became “Mom” to many of them.
Dixie had a fondness for gardening and farming. Her yard never lacked growth. She was always eager to try new varieties of crops and flowers. She would often send seeds and starts to her family and regularly checked in on the growth progress. Along with plant life, she was attached to a number of animals that each held a special place in her heart. Horses and ponies, goats, chickens, turkeys, guineas, peacocks, emus, a llama, dogs, and cats, you name it!
Dixie’s greatest passion and achievements were her grandchildren. She always made sure that they had memories to last a lifetime. There was never an event that occurred in which she didn’t have a camera or video recorder in hand. She documented every trip, holiday, and visit. She was always planning trips and outings for the family. Even when she could no longer join them, she consistently planned special adventures for Grandpa to do with the kids. She was always there in spirit...and in Grandpa’s ear. He wore a headset that always had Grandma on the other end of the line so she could hear the excitement and joy taking place. One thing is for sure, the family will always have footage and fond memories to hold near and dear. They will always know Grandma loved them with every fiber of her being.
Those who knew Dixie best would describe her as stubborn, bull-headed, fiercely independent, demanding, and set in her ways. I guarantee she is laughing and nodding excessively, “Damn straight, and you better remember that too!” She was determined, fearless and bold. She was clever, sPunky, and enjoyed Monkeying around. She had a Gizmo for everything. She was wise beyond her years. She loved with her whole heart; her love for her family was beyond measure. She will be Majorly missed.
Dixie is survived by her husband of nearly 34 years, Frederick “Fred” Hickcox of Ogden, IA; son, Clint (Desirae) Markley of Malcom, IA; grandchildren, Alanna, Kaydence, and Landon; and great-grandson, Daxton; brother, Darvin “Dar” (Kim) Dykes of Bloomfield, IA; a niece, Kyla of Des Moines, IA; and nephew, Brock of Cedar Rapids, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ace “Ray” and Janice “Elaine” Dykes, and an especially cherished Aunt Martha Longnecker.
