Doyle Stoner

Our favorite engineer, fisherman, hunter, dog whisperer, dad, friend, mentor, and all-around funniest guy we knew, Doyle Kent "Stoney" Stoner, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025, after a brief fight with esophageal cancer. He was 78.
Born on July 20, 1946, in Boone, Iowa, to Luvern Oscar Stoner and Pauline Elizabeth (Naslund) Stoner, Stoney was a true farm kid. He grew up outside Stratford, Iowa, where he learned the value of hard work, developed a lifelong love for the outdoors, discovered a passion for music and playing guitar, and formed a love-hate relationship with horses and most other farm animals.
He graduated from Stratford High School in 1964, where he dabbled in baseball (a catcher until he broke his nose), graced the stage in the school play, blew his horn in the band (he played trumpet until it interfered with deer season), and even drove a school bus.
When Uncle Sam was about to come calling, Stoney, ever the pragmatist, figured he'd pick his branch before they picked for him, so he joined the Air Force. He served from 1966 to 1969 with the 544th Aerospace Reconnaissance Technical Wing. In 1969, he was offered the tempting deal of early discharge if he went to college. He headed to Iowa State University, where he earned an associate's degree in engineering.
After college, Stoney landed at Northern Natural Gas in Ogden, Iowa, where he spent his career as an engineer and corrosion technician. He hung up his work boots in 2001, retiring to a life of sitting in boats waiting for fish, walking through fields with a hunting dog flushing birds, and searching the timber for every other land animal.
Somewhere in between all that, he managed to buy a house, raise three very lucky hunting dogs, get married to and divorced from Vicki (Stark) Stoner, have a daughter (whom he took fishing approximately 100,000 times), and make a ton of friends in and around Ogden.
Stoney was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Tracy. He leaves behind his daughter Kristin (JR Wymer) of Urbandale, Iowa, and his grandson, Flynn Doyle Wymer, who will surely inherit his legendary sense of humor.
We'll miss you, Stoney.
Help us remember Stoney at his Gone Fishing Memorial on Sunday, April 27th, 3-5 PM at the Lodge by the Lake, Don Williams Recreation Area, Boone County, Iowa.
Any memorials in his honor will be donated by the family to the Puppy Jake Foundation.
Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home is assisting the family. Online condolences may be left at www.schroederfuneral.com.
