Meet the city council candidate: Dave Ohlson

Why am I seeking re-election?

During my terms on the city council we have fully implemented or are diligently working on projects we feel will bring much needed improvements to our community. Right now Ogden's main street is experiencing a nice spurt of growth and vibrance, with the news about a new Fareway store to replace our lost grocery store, businesses that have remained anchors for our main street and some new shops and services added. I want to continue to serve on the council to see those things and some exciting things on our horizon to completion.

What background skill do I have that makes me qualified for City Council?

I would say that the skill sets taught to me by my father and mother have made me realize that it's not enough just to be a resident in a small community. My wife Donna and I are longtime Ogden residents and have been a part of many local projects and committees. We feel that it is exciting to see people enjoying our communities. Celebrations such as Ogden Fun Days, Ogden Motor Show, Oktoberfest, town wide cleanups, Christmas celebrations, benefits for special causes and our local church events are some of our favorite events that we like to be involved with.

What are the biggest issues facing Ogden today?

One of the biggest issues facing Ogden is the deficit of available new housing. If we could attract 100 new families to our community, that would mean more tax dollars for our school district, our infrastructure, public safety systems, and ensure that goods and service providers remain here and new ones want to locate here. Lastly, with increased enrollment, our public schools will remain stronger than ever.

How would the City Council address these issues?

Ogden Legacy and our City Council have for some time been working on a very aggressive campaign to stimulate the building of new housing within the city. We believe that the addition of 100 or more new residences will not only bring new families to settle in Ogden, but bring more revitalization to Main Street and put many more students in our schools. More tax revenue will strengthen our public safety entities and infrastructure.

If elected, what are the three biggest goals for my term?

*Continue to work on and find new ways to stimulate new housing and encourage renovation and cleanup of existing properties.

*Help attract new businesses to our town and provide a place where light industrial businesses and services can locate separate from residential areas.

*Make sure that our tax revenue is allocated wisely so that our infrastructure and public safety entities grow with our community.
