Warren and Carol first met in September 1950. Carol had recently started teaching in Ogden, and was working at the ticket stand for the Bulldog football game. Carol caught the eye of Warren, who was attending the game with friends. They dated for several months, were engaged by the following August, and were married in Earlham, Iowa on December 23, 1951.
They went on a road trip to Florida for their honeymoon. There were no restaurants open on Christmas Eve, so they ended up heating a can of soup on a room heater in a hotel for their Christmas Eve dinner.
