RAGBRAI team in Ogden

Team Backswing over-nighted in Ogden at the home of Sharan Alban. Sharon is pictured to the left with her son in law, Mark Fern, to her right and her granddaughter to her front. Mark played football with the Ogden state runner up class of 79'. His family moved away after that year, but Mark came back for his high school sweet heart's Ogden prom and later married her. That sweet heart being Sharon's daughter, Diane. Team Backswing is from Colorado, Nebraska, and Memphis, Tennessee.

Mason Fundraiser

Good on the Masons for all they do for the community and beyond. And for all their great fund raiser dinners. This last Sunday of July was a fish fry with sweet corn, cole slaw and great deserts. The Masons have done recent fund raisers for veterans, the OHS senior trip, the food pantry and more. Shown in the pics is lodge master Brian Ahrens in the blue shirt and Dean Houser, president of the Shrine group boiling sweet corn. The Masons have been in Ogden since 1872. The Mirza Rhodes Mason Lodge represents the combined Ogden and Pilot Mound lodges.

• The Pledge of Allegiance was recited to open the meeting, a practice added as a show of patriotism and respect for the United States Flag and what it stands for. It is not known if at one time the Pledge was recited before supervisor meetings or, if so, why it was discontinued.

• Welcomed guests were DMACC President Rob Denson and Boone Campus Provost Drew Nelson. All or part of 22 Iowa counties are in DMACC's service area and Denson is working to visit and present to each county’s board of supervisors. Key takeaways:

Norma Herridge crochets

She makes a great many hot pads that are given out by the Ogden Food Pantry and other outlets. She also makes warm scarves for school kids.

Norma went to school in Beaver and Ogden. She played the piano for two Beaver area churches. She is a resident at the Acura Home in Ogden. Norma enjoys crocheting and doing nice things for other people.

• Approved Special Class C Retail Alcohol & Outdoor Service Licenses for Thirsty Pigs, LLC, and Sassy Lemonade Slushes, both including the dates of July 25-26, when RAGBRAI will travel through Boone County.

• County Recorder Erin Canfield provided a departmental report. For Fiscal Year 2022-23 just ended:

- 66 new boats were registered, with 229 renewals (boats renew again in 2025)

- 19 new snowmobiles were registered, with 211 renewals

CUMC welcomes new pastor to the congregation

There is a new family roaming around the streets of Ogden. The Farmer family has come to Ogden as Heidi Farmer has taken over as the new pastor for the Community Methodist Church. Farmer has taken a cross country journey over the years to end up in the community.

“So I am a newly commissioned pastor in the United Methodist Church and I was appointed here,” she said. “I had a meeting with the church in May to see if it would be a good fit.”

Ogden City Council Discusses Black Hills Energy, Councilmember Compensation, and a New Veterans Memorial

The Ogden City Council met on Tuesday, July 11, with all members of the Council present. City Administrator Emily Clausen gave several updates to the Council. For streets supervisor Dan Buzzell, Clausen informed the Council that he is currently working on painting street markings, the company cutting out the manholes will be coming in the next week or two, and Buzzell asked the Council if a parking spot on the corner of Water’s Edge due to lack of visibility.

As required by Iowa Code, the board of supervisors must meet the first business day of the new fiscal year starting July 1. As such, there will not be a Wednesday morning meeting this week.

• Total FY24 budget appropriations in the amount of $22,307,516 was approved, along with $4,083,000 in other financing uses, for a total of FY24 expenditures and uses of $26,390.516.

Topics of interest from the Boone County Board of Supervisors June 21 meeting

• Noting that Boone County relies heavily upon and greatly appreciates its many election workers, Elections Clerk Emily Craig presented proposed new hourly pay rates for FY24. Proposed rates range from $10 to $12 per hour, up from $9 to $10 per hour currently. A formal request will be considered at a coming board meeting.

Arboretum breaks ground on Treehouse Village

Thursday morning was a big day for the Iowa Arboretum just southeast of Ogden. The longtime central Iowa stalwart of beauty held a groundbreaking ceremony for their newest project. A project designed to get families with children to visit the arboretum. A treehouse village open to everyone, an all inclusive play area for all kids to enjoy.
