Keenan named OHS Student of the Month

 It is always a pleasure when we get the opportunity to celebrate a student for the positive impact that they have had on their school, their classmates, their teachers, and their community. We proudly recognize Ella Keenan as our January Student of the Month and celebrate her many successes as a student at Ogden High School.

This is the annual organizational meeting, required to take place on the first business day of the new year for every county in Iowa.

  • Welcomed newly elected Supervisor Shawn Bryant to his first meeting.

  • Appointed Supervisor Bill Zinnel to position of Chairman and Supervisor Erich Kretzinger to position of Vice Chairman for 2023.

  • Designated Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. for regularly scheduled board meetings in 2023.

New Boone County Hospital CEO starts

We are excited to have our new CEO of Boone County Hospital Mikaela Kienitz, RN, MSN, FACHE, on board. She officially started January 3. 

Lasagna Love For All

Local community members are helping provide meals to everyone and anyone through a nonprofit entitled Lasagna Love. The idea originally started when Rhiannon Menn wanted to help after many people lost their jobs during Covid in June of 2020. She wanted to help and connect with her local community by providing a well-known and beloved meal: lasagna. The company then expanded into Lasagna Love which is now a national home-cooked meal delivery service. In each community their regional directors, local leaders, and chefs. Twyla Wisecup is the current regional leader for the Ames/Boone area.

  • Accepted the retirement of Brian Pontius, Detective, Boone County Sheriff’s Department, effective January 19, with appreciation for his many years of service.  Approved appointment of Deputy Seth McCrea to the position of Detective.

  • Approved signing of a Pavement Markings Contract with Vogel Traffic Service, Inc., for $173,288.40.  All paved Boone County roads are re-marked every two years.

Longtime Ogden Chief rides off into the sunset

  Long time Ogden Police Chief, Mick Bailey, started with the Ogden Police in early 1988.  He retired on the last day of 2022.  He wants to thank the city and citizens of Ogden for letting him serve them for 35 years.

  An estimated 300 people attended his retirement open house and many more wished him well on a local Facebook page.  These are testaments to how much the chief means to Ogden and the surrounding area.

Caston Joins Local Salon

Jo’s Haircuts for Men, located at 237 W Walnut St, Ogden, IA, has a new face. Kennedy Caston joined the owner, Olivia Long, at the shop. Caston and Long are no strangers to each other; they went to school together at PCI in Ames, IA, for their cosmetology training. After school, the two went their separate ways but remained in contact. Caston, a Jefferson local, stayed around the area where she met her husband, Seth, who had two children and continued to do hair for five years. But during her second pregnancy, Caston decided she needed a break from working to care for her children.

Digitizing Boone County Records

At the Boone County Recorder’s Office, a large-scale digitizing effort is taking place to preserve the county’s record books. The books date back to 1855 and contain real estate records and other addendums that people can access to see the change in ownership for all land in the county of Boone and other vital records. Chris Duncan, the Boone County recorder since 2019, continued the project after the previous Recorder left. Archisearch (a digital archiving service based in Minnesota) helps preserve the handwritten calligraphy and fragile pages.

Approved a five day Special Class C Liquor License for Hy-Vee at Farm Progress Show 2022, August 29 – September 2. Approved a 5-day Special Class C Liquor License for Luke Bryan Farm Tour 2022 for September 22 – 26.

Set a Budget Amendment Public Hearing for September 28, 10:00 a.m., in the second floor supervisors boardroom.

Waived tipping fees for one load of municipal solid waste for the City of Somers community cleanup event on September 16. Located in Calhoun County with a population of 128, Somers is in the DNR-assigned service area of Boone County Landfill.

UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital announces 2022 Kid Captains

Twelve current and former University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital patients are ready to kick off fall as the Kid Captain program returns for the 2022 Iowa Hawkeye football season.

This year marks the 13th season of the Kid Captain program, which started in 2009 as a partnership between UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital and the Iowa Hawkeyes to honor pediatric patients and celebrate their incredible stories. This year’s Kid Captains were selected from 288 nominations from four states.
