Ogden Student Takes First Place at State PBL Competition

The Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) student business organization at DMACC recently participated in the State Leadership Conference held in Coralville on April 1 and 2. The students, accompanied by their advisors Dr. Joe Hanson, Chris Moon and Susan McCoy, competed against other Iowa college students in various business-related events, receiving both individual and chapter awards.

The PBL place winners include:

Maria King of Carroll placed first in Entrepreneurship Concepts, first in Sales Presentation and second in the Future Business Educator category.

Hy-Vee Partners with Meals from the Heartland to Package 300,000 Meals for Ukraine

Hy-Vee will be hosting an event called “Unite for Ukraine” on Tuesday, April 26, to support Iowa’s effort to aid Ukraine by providing meals for those located in war-torn areas. Hy-Vee is donating $50,000 from the company’s One Step charitable program to fund the public event, which will be held at its Ron Pearson Center, 5820 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines.

Boone County Community Foundation Plans $160,815 Awards Presentation

The Boone County Community Foundation is planning a celebration presentation and announcement of their grantmaking awards and results. The event will be held at the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad Museum on Thursday, April 21 at 6 p.m. Grant recipients and their Boards, elected officials and the general public are encouraged to attend.

15th Annual American Cancer Society’s Iowa Coaches vs. Cancer Gala, presented by Hy-Vee, Friday, May 13th

The American Cancer Society will celebrate its 15th anniversary of the Coaches vs. Cancer Gala, presented by Hy-Vee is on Friday, May 13, 2022 at the Ron Pearson Center.

This event brings together four universities as one team, in the fight against cancer. Coach Ben Jacobson (UNI), Coach Darian DeVries (Drake), Coach Fran McCaffery (Iowa) and Coach T.J. Otzelberger (ISU) will be attending the event to raise funds to fight cancer. Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society's mission to save lives, celebrate lives and lead the fight for a world without cancer.

Boone County Conservation Boards listens to public in forum

There was a lot of passion, a bit of anger and a lot of questions towards the Boone County Conservation Board on Tuesday night at the Leonard A. Good Community Center in Ogden. The board held a public forum regarding their plans for the Don Williams golf course and clubhouse going forward.

Welcomed guest was Linda Price, representing National Day of Prayer, with a request to allow an observance on the courthouse grounds May 5. The National Day of Prayer tradition was first evidenced by a Continental Congress' proclamation in 1775 setting aside a day of prayer.

In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer, and in 1988, the law was amended to designate the first Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer. With encouragement, an event outline was requested before granting final approval.

DMACC Foundation to allocate record $2 million in scholarships

The DMACC Foundation is allocating a record $2 million in scholarships to DMACC students for FY 2023. This amount far exceeds the previous dollar amount of $1.7 million awarded in the FY 2022. This allocation comes as the DMACC Foundation is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The DMACC Foundation has served tens of thousands of students and delivered millions in scholarship support over the past 50 years.

DMACC participates in National Crime Victims’ Rights Week

National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) has been observed in Iowa and across the country each April since 1981, to raise awareness about crime victims’ issues and rights, and introduce the community to the important resources and services available. According to the most recent Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey, U.S. residents age 12 or older experienced 4.6 million violent victimizations and U.S. households experienced an estimated 12.8 million property crimes in 2020.

Naomi Sea Young Wittstruck is named Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at DMACC

Naomi Sea Young Wittstruck has been named DMACC’s Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).

She brings more than 12 years of experience working in organizational management and program development on DEI initiatives with non-profit organizations, governmental entities and privately-funded institutions.

Gov. Reynolds announces $100M investment in Iowa’s quality of life and tourism

Gov. Reynolds last Thursday announced a $100 million investment to bolster the quality of life in Iowa’s communities and attract visitors and new residents to the state. The new effort, called Destination Iowa, will provide grants to help communities move forward on transformational, shovel-ready attractions. Cities, counties, nonprofits and other organizations can apply for Destination Iowa grants from four separate funds: Economically Significant Development, Outdoor Recreation, Tourism Attraction, and Creative Placemaking.
