Iowa Department of Education releases new spring student assessment results, updates postsecondary readiness reports

DES MOINES — The Iowa Department of Education today released new spring 2021 assessment results from K-3 early literacy screenings and the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress for students in grades 3-11 and updated the state’s website on postsecondary readiness. Iowa fully administered the assessments this past spring and is one of the first states to release comprehensive data about student performance over the last year.

The Lucky Pig celebrates a decade of business

Ten. The number of years the Lucky Pig has been serving up all sorts of dishes to the people of Ogden and anyone passing through town looking for a bite to eat. Through the past 10 years, the restaurant has seen ownership change hands, but the momentum built continues to soar on.

Craig and Carol Christensen opened the Lucky Pig in the summer of 2011 and built the restaurant up as a go-to for pork products. The biggest accomplishment for the Lucky Pig came in 2014 when they were awarded with the Best Tenderloin in Iowa, given out by the Iowa Pork Producers.

Pufferbilly Days™ 2021 is Back on Track Announcing a Full Event Schedule

Celebrate Pufferbilly Days™ Opening Ceremonies before the festival begins, at First Thursdays on August 5! This event features live music by The Bushmen, the Boone County Farmers’ Market, food trucks and craft vendors, plus beer and root beer from Boone Valley Brewing Co. The fun kicks off at 5pm with the presentation of the Community Service Award and presentation of the Pufferbilly Days™ Parade Grand Marshal, Sally Courter, at 5:30 p.m. First Thursdays is a free event with food, beer and root beer, and craft and merchandise available for purchase.

OHS alum Satre found his calling in the clouds

Some people are a little lucky. They know exactly what they want to do in life before they reach high school, or have an inkling of what their career path will be. For Ogden alum Zane Satre, he knew at a young age what he wanted to do with his life, become a meteorologist as he resides in the Quad Cities working for WHBF for their morning program.

Rinker re-elected to Iowa Extension Council Association

Kim Rinker of Ogden has been re-elected to the board of directors of the Iowa Extension Council Association, according to Jennifer Vit, Executive Director of the association. Rinker is a 21-year member of the Boone County Extension Council and represents Region 14 which includes Boone, Carroll, Greene, and Guthrie counties.

Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace to reopen

The Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace in Boone will reopen at 10 a.m. on July 1. Initially it will be open four days a week, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1:30 to 5 p.m. It will expand hours as additional volunteers sign up to conduct tours.

The Birthplace is currently owned and operated by the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Foundation. In May of 2021, it was restored to the Foundation by the Boone County Historical Society, which had operated the facility since 2006.

The program highlights Tetsuya Theodore "Ted" Fujita, a Japanese-American engineer turned meteorologist whose discovery of microbursts transformed aviation safety and saved untold numbers of lives.

Feenstra Announces 2021 Congressional App Challenge

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Randy Feenstra (IA-04) announced middle and high school students across Iowa’s 4th Congressional District are invited to participate in the 2021 Congressional App Challenge. Officially launched in 2015, this competition is a nationwide event intended to engage students’ creativity and encourage their participation in STEM fields.

Skinner family able to purchase van with community help

The struggle of the Skinner family has been known around the Ogden community for the past 18 months. Andrew and Brittany Skinner gave birth to their daughter Elliana in November of 2019, but Elliana was born with an unexpected genetic condition that caused her lungs to not fully develop correctly, and she also has pulmonary hypertension.
