Bulldogs are 2A state softball champs!

When it came down to the 2A championship game at the state softball tournament, the Ogden Bulldogs relied on what’s carried them through this entire season. That is strong pitching, timely hitting and great defense to back up Denali Loecker. It turned out to be more than enough in grabbing their first state softball title, and first ever state title in any sport for the school, in the 6-1 win over two-time defending champ North Linn (Troy Mills).

Bulldog baseball finishes schedule, then enters districts

The Ogden baseball continued to try hard to pick up both wins and more experience as their schedule wound down and they prepared themselves for postseason tournament play.

Last Tuesday saw them host Madrid, losing 8-1 to the Tigers. Scott Westberg ripped a double to bring home Kolby Moorman for the lone score. Sam Christensen stroked two base hits as the only other connections. Westberg, Christensen and Dylan Elbert all drew a free pass each, with Ethan Snedden stealing a base.

Ogden softball scores huge win over Madrid

Last Tuesday the Ogden softball team hosted Madrid, and were not exactly a congenial host in taking a 17-0 win. Loecker pitched yet another perfect game as the Tiger bats were completely shackled. She also aided her cause with another homerun as well, a three-run round tripper. The first inning barrage of runs started with Meredith Adreon getting a base hit, with Loecker then walking to first. Jenna Palmer blasted a double to score both, followed by Gabby Ross reaching on an error. Dutcher walked, setting up Reagan Church’s sac fly to score Ross.

Bulldogs take extra inning win over ACGC

Last Monday, June 22, the Ogden Bulldogs hosted Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center and squeaked out a 4-3 win over the Chargers in eight innings. The game was tied 1-1 after four complete frames, with the home team pushing across on score in the fifth to take the lead. The visitors tied it at 2-2 in the top of the sixth, and that’s where the scoreboard stood after seven were in the books. The Chargers plated one in their half of the eighth, but the Bulldogs were able to bring two across to pull it out.

Lady Bulldogs suffer first two losses of year

(Editor’s note-In last week’s Ogden softball story, it should have said that Denali Loecker threw a perfect game versus Grand View Christian. My apologies for the error).

The Ogden softball team is currently enjoying winning so much, and who wouldn’t, that they kept it going strong this past week. That is until they ran into a couple of teams at a tournament in Boone that tagged them with their first losses of the season.

Bulldog girls start the season red hot

For a team that is brimming with potential this year, the third-rated (2A) Bulldog softball team seems to already be living up to their preseason billing. In their latest outing last Friday with Grand View Christian, Denali Loecker pitched a no-hitter to easily win 10-0 in six innings over the out-matched Thunder. The ladies jumped from the gate strong, going up 4-0 after one frame. It started with a lead-off double by Meredith Adreon, followed by Jenna Palmer bringing her home on a single. Hannah Dutcher followed with a double to bring in Palmer.

Bulldog boys of summer start off well with two wins in four contests

Despite the fact that the Bulldog baseball team had to undertaken the replacing of a lot of the moving parts from a year, you would have trouble knowing that from the results of their opening week of action. They started their season last Monday with a good effort in a close nine-inning 5-4 loss at Madrid. The Tigers had taken the early lead into the fifth before the ‘Dogs finally plated two scores then tacked on two more runs in the final inning. While it still wasn’t quite enough, the effort was certainly there along with chance at a win up until the end.

Everybody returns from Ogden softball's state run

The Ogden softball team is ready for another chance at a state tournament run.

The Bulldogs finished as consolation winners in the 2A tournament last summer with a 26-8 overall record, dropping a 4-0 state quarterfinal match-up to East Marshall, but re-bounding with a 12-3 thump-ing of Central Springs in a consolation game.

Umpires give outlook for summer

Since the okay has been given to return to Iowa high school summer sports, baseball and softball, what will it look for the officials who call the games?

Some area umpires weighed in on just that.

Umpires, including former Hampton-Dumont athletic director Nate Boock (currently AD at Ballard) and Mason City’s Scott Whitehill said they were not at all fearful about returning to call balls and strikes, there have been about 25 percent of officials who are in the older and at-risk category who have already said they would opt out of working in 2020.

Barbier named Ogden Girls Basketball Head Coach

John Barbier has been named the new head girls basketball coach at Ogden High School and looks forward to next season with a focus on team-work and the benefit of 26 years of varsity coaching expe-rience.

“I’m very grateful for this opportunity. Ogden is a won-derful school with a great ath-letic tradition. Like all of us, I hope things return to normal soon, so I can start working with the dedicated athletes in the girls’ basketball program,” said Barbier.
